Overview

MarkFoundry is designed with local-first workflows. Your documents are primarily stored in your browser or on your device when you choose to open and save files locally.

Browser local storage

MarkFoundry uses browser local storage and IndexedDB to cache workspace state, recent files, and unsaved drafts. This data stays on your device unless you clear browser data.

Uploaded files

When you open local files or import documents, file content is processed in your browser or sent to conversion services only as needed for import and export operations.

What stays local vs. what is sent

On your device: Markdown, JSON, and YAML editing, live preview, validation, workspace state, recent files, and unsaved draft recovery all run in your browser. No account is required.

Sent to the conversion service: Only when you request PDF or DOCX export, or DOCX import — your document content is transmitted over HTTPS, processed temporarily, and returned. It is not stored permanently by default.

What data touches the conversion service

The conversion service receives document content only when you explicitly request PDF export, DOCX export, or DOCX import. This includes the Markdown or document content needed to produce the output file. Editing, preview, JSON/YAML validation, and browser cache operations do not send data to the conversion service.

What is never sent

  • Markdown, JSON, or YAML editing and live preview
  • JSON and YAML validation
  • Workspace state, recent files, and browser cache
  • Files you open and save locally without using export or import

Retention

Conversion processing is temporary. Files submitted for conversion are used only to generate output and should not be stored permanently by default. Specific retention periods may vary by deployment; contact us for details.

Encryption in transit

All conversion requests are transmitted over HTTPS (TLS). MarkFoundry does not claim end-to-end encryption or at-rest encryption unless explicitly configured in an Enterprise deployment.

Conversion service

PDF and DOCX conversions pass through a secure conversion service. Files should not be stored permanently by default. Conversion processing is temporary and used only to generate output files. Learn about the architecture.

Enterprise and security review

Enterprise customers can request a security review and private deployment options. Contact support for inquiries.

Your control

You control what files you open, save, and export. MarkFoundry does not require an account for core editing features in the first version.
